Abrasax was a word of mystic meaning in the system of the Gnostic Basilides, being there applied to the “Great Archon”, the princeps of the 365 spheres. The 7 letters spelling its name may represent each of the 7 classic planets—Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The word is found in Gnostic texts such as the Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit, and also appears in the Greek Magical Papyri. It was engraved on certain antique gemstones, called on that account Abraxas stones, which were used as amulets or charms. As the initial spelling on stones was ‘Abrasax’, the spelling of ‘Abraxas’ seen today probably originates in the confusion made between the Greek letters Sigma and Xi in the Latin transliteration. The word may be related to Abracadabra, although other explanations exist. There are similarities and differences between such figures in reports about Basilides’ teaching, ancient Gnostic texts, the larger Greco-Roman magical traditions, and modern magical and esoteric writings. Opinions abound on Abraxas, who in recent centuries has been claimed to be both an Egyptian god and a demon. The Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung wrote a short Gnostic treatise in 1916 called The Seven Sermons to the Dead, which called Abraxas a God higher than the Christian God and Devil, that combines all opposites into one Being.

Did you know about the Theosophy Order of Service

Healing Network

Let not the fierce sun dry one tear of pain before thyself hast wiped it from the sufferer’s eye. But let each burning human tear drop on thy heart and there remain, nor ever brush it off, until the pain that caused it is removed. From The Voice of The Silence ~ H.P. Blavatsky

It’s easy to become complacent or even despondent, especially around the holidays. There is very strong evidence that our thoughts, words and deeds do have an impact beyond our immediate awareness through the Unified Field of Consciousness. It therefore becomes our moral obligation to contribute in any way we can to the positive energy of our universe.
One way of achieving this is to consciously invoke the angelic hosts to send healing love to those who suffer. The TOS manages a Healing Network Hotline which has offered this service for more than 15 years at no charge. It’s comprised of 42 groups and individuals world-wide committed to performing healing services on a regular basis. You can submit names for healing via phone or on-line. These names are then distributed to the network, and healing services are provided for one month. I encourage anyone and everyone, theosophist and non-theosophist alike to contribute the names of their loved ones who have become ill. We can effect change and facilitate healing; because we are one.
