Tonight in South Philly Rock Pioneer Charlie Gracie Gets Back To Where It All Began with Sir Paul McCartney
Philadelphia, June 21, 2015 — A native of South Philadelphia, Charlie Gracie became the first successful recording star of the Rock Era to emerge from the neighborhood. In 1957 Charlie’s Butterfly topped the music charts selling over 3 million copies. His late 50’s big seller Fabulous under Philly’s famous Cameo-Parkway label was a favorite of Paul McCartney, who paid tribute to his idol by recording an updated version of Fabulous in his Run Devil Run CD Series.
In January of this year Charlie’s autobiography Rock & Roll’s Hidden Giant was released with a glowing forward penned by Sir Paul:
When we were starting out with The Beatles, the music coming over from America was magical to us – and one of the artists who epitomized this magic was Charlie Gracie.
When Sir Paul’s Out There Tour hits the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday June 21st the rock legends – two of the hardest working guys in the business – plan to get together for a few minutes before the show, reminisce and shared a story or two about the magical era they helped to shape – the birth of rock and roll.
Today, Charlie is still doing what he loves best, touring the United States and Great Britain, where he remains a steadfast favorite. In 1998 Charlie was voted into Now Dig This Magazine’s Great Britain Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. As if that weren’t enough to keep the seasoned rocker busy, Charlie is holding book signings and making personal appearances throughout the area, usually with his big old Gretsch guitar in tow where he often can be persuaded to treat his fans to something Fabulous.
